Cultural sights
Besides the Diocletian palace from the 3rd century protected by UNESCO and within the walls of which large number of cultural events take place, there are also museums churches and other historical sights. Outside the walls there is also the building of National theatre located on the top of Marmontova street and where Split is a city of culture. Museums of Split are situated within and out of the city walls.
There are numerous festivals in Split during summer: Split music festival on Prokurative, Split summer festival on Peristil when dramas, operas and concerts of classical music, ballet take place in that antique environment. Every year the philharmonic orchestra as well national and foreign traveling theatres come to perform in Split. If you are a lover of art, you will find in Split numerous galleries with sculptures and paintings. A museum had been built especially in honor of a renowned Croatian sculptor and artist Mestrovic. In Mestrovic gallery, studio and park there are on exposition many works of art, particularly paintings and sculptures made of wood, stone, bronze, marm as well as various sketches and drawings. If you like sacral culture, visiting st. Domnius' treasury is a must. There you will find ecclesiastical clothes from 15th century, metal objects used during liturgy and books among which Splitski evanđelistar (Gospel of Split) is the oldest book written in this region, probably during the existence of the ancient cit of Salona. The curious ones will be particularly intrigued by relics of different shapes and two crosses made in 8th century.
